How do you create a font? It seems like it should be a complicated process, right? Well it’s actually extremely simple! In this guide I will walk you through the process of creating your first handwritten font. At the end of this tutorial, you will have your very own downloadable font that you can either keep to yourself, or share with others!
Creating Your Font
Step 1: Create Your FREE Account in Calligraphr
The first step in creating your first font is to download the free template where you will be creating your letters. You’ll need to click here and create a login on Calligraphr in order to download your free template.
Simply click “Log In” in the upper righthand corner, and you will receive a confirmation email immediately after submitting your information. Again, this is a FREE service but you will need to make sure to put the correct email address in order to confirm the account, otherwise you will not be able to access the free handwriting template.
Step 2: Download Template
After you confirm your email, login to Calligraphr and select “Start App”
Then proceed by selecting “Create a template”
This is where you will select all of the letters/characters you would like to create for your font. I normally select “Minimal English” under the Basics tab. If you would like to include numbers in your font, you can also select “minimal numbers”.
Once you have decided on your characters, select “Download Template”
Then you will save your template as a PDF, as shown below, by clicking “Download”
Step 3: Print and Fill in Template
Now that you have your PDF, you can print the document to start creating your handwritten font!
**TIP: Make sure each character stays within the outlines of each box. You will have the opportunity to do a little editing once your font is uploaded in Calligraphr, but this just makes for a much smoother process.
Step 4: Scan Template or Take Photo
Once you have finished filling in your template, it’s time to scan your document back to the computer. If you do not have a scanner, you can snap a photo and send it to the computer, although it could just mean a little more editing depending on the lighting–try to avoid shadows. **If you are looking for an affordable printer with a scanner, I recommend the Epson Expression. You can’t beat a $44 printer/scanner!
Now that you have uploaded the document (or snapped a photo and saved it to your computer), you will go back to Calligraphr and select My Fonts > Upload Template
You will then upload your completed template. If you have a file with multiple pages, be sure to CHOOSE ALL FILES before selecting Upload Template.
Once the file uploads, select Add Characters To Your Font
Step 5: Edit your Font (if needed)
To edit your font, you will select a letter, any letter!
Then you can manipulate each letter by choosing Edit Character and Adjust Baseline.
Edit Character: this will allow you to do fine tuning of the letter. It also allows you to erase any stray marks.
Adjust Baseline: this allows you to increase/decrease letter size as well as shifting the letter up or down on the baseline.
Step 6: Build Your Font
Once you have finished your editing, you are ready to Build Font.
Be sure to Name Your Font, then select Build.
You will then save your file as a .TTF
If you would like to download the font to your computer, you can open the file and select Install. You may also submit your font to a website where others can download your font. My favorite is DaFont.
